Fiber Art for All: Winter in Bloom

Join us in embracing color and connection through fiber art!  February 20 – 24

What’s Fiber Art for All (FAFA)?

This weeklong celebration of fiber art started in 2020 as a way to celebrate all things fiber art and textiles, to stay connected during a time of isolation, and to stay inspired during our cold and dark Minnesota winters.  FAFA has evolved with our changing times, and we now offer in-person and virtual ways to engage with us during the week!

Our Fiber Art for All goal remains the same:  To offer fiber art events for all ages and familiarities with fiber arts, to foster new connections, to nurture longtime connections, and to spread the joy of fiber art with our community.

This year’s theme is Fiber Art for All: Winter in Bloom. We have an exciting lineup of events (below), including the return of our Makers Market, artist and guild demos, exhibitions, a collaborative community flower project, and more!

FLORA BOREALIS

Let’s keep our Textile Center garden blooming through the winter!  We invite everyone — all ages and skill levels —  to participate in our winter community garden by creating a fiber flower using your favorite fiber art form or technique.

STEP ONE: Create your flower

Let’s keep the environment top of mind (it’s a garden, after all!) Please do your best to make sure your flower doesn’t have loose pieces that may fly away with the wind, and to use natural fibers in making your flower.

STEP TWO: Drop off or mail in your flower

Drop off or mail in your flower (8×8” or smaller) anytime now until February 16, 2024!

  • For Flora Borealis participants who are dropping off flowers: Find the flower box in our center, right by the entrance to the Community Room! Please fill out a paper intake slip and include it in the bag with your flower.
  • For Flora Borealis participants who are mailing us fiber flowers: Please print and fill out the following form, and include it in your mailed package.  Please mail your piece to:  Chloe Russell Chang / Textile Center, 3000 University Ave SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414.

STEP THREE: Watch the garden grow!

We’ll awaken the garden by displaying all of our fiber flowers through the week of Feb 20-24, 2024.

Join us for a grand reveal and garden lighting on Saturday, Feb 24, at 5 pm.

Need materials? Come browse our Textile Center Garage Sale for yarn enthusiasts February 2 – 4 at Textile Center!

FIBER FINDS SALE

Many fiber goods have found their way into our hands over the years. We’ve assembled the brightest and most colorful pieces, filled with floral and nature prints, for our Fiber Finds Sale during Fiber Art for All: Winter in Bloom! Find Guatemalan and Indian textiles, garments and quilted goods, and more. Add some color to your wardrobe during the colorless winter months!

Shop the sale all week long, Tuesday, Feb 20 – Saturday, Feb 24, in our Textile Center Shop.

CRAFT NIGHT: HYANG NANG

Join us for a special Craft Night event during Fiber Art for All week and create hand-stitched hyang nang (perfume sachets) using scrap pieces of silk fabric.

In Joseon Dynasty Korea, gyubang referred to the room where women gathered to stitch and socialize. With the guidance of artist Jae Veenstra, Textile Center will honor this cultural tradition by creating an immersive environment where we will stitch together, meet new friends, and create a hangable assemblage complete with hyang nang sachet, essential oils, beads, and a personalized note in which participants may release a worry or a wish.

We’ll slow down with meditative music, hot tea, and provision of all materials needed to create these hyang nang artworks using traditional jogakbo (patchwork) stitching techniques.

$15 per person. All supplies are provided!
Open to participants of ALL genders and skill levels.

MORE COMING SOON! Check back.
